Biopolo Ticino – the working net in life sciences

The Biopolo Ticino has just shortly concluded its first year of operations. The idea to create a technological hub for the life sciences in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland followed a natural development that the region has been undergoing during the last couple of years. The objectives of the Biopolo Ticino are to catalyze and sustain the local integration of technology and knowledge in the field of the life sciences, with the final goal of creating a cluster with high visibility. Furthermore, its activities are focusing on promoting the integrated Ticino life science competencies outside the local boundaries, and to promote/coach/attract interesting and interested entities to Ticino. Its aim is to become a one-stop shop and a portal for the life sciences in, from and to Ticino. Besides the main networking activities the Biopolo Ticino is able to offer specific coaching and support services along the value chain (e.g. tech transfer, tech scouting, creation of business plans).

Also in Ticino the biopharmaceutical and chemical sectors are successful and very important value-creating industrial sectors for the regional economy. For example, in 2003 Helsinn, a local pharmaceutical company, together with MGI pharma Inc, obtained the FDA approval for an anti-emetic drug in the USA. In addition, the territory also offers a number of production plants that have been inspected and approved by the FDA. However the main focus of the local life science activities are industrial, service and less R&D driven.

Swiss Biotech – Reaching the Peak of Innovation

Swiss Biotech unites the various Biotech Regions of Switzerland. The marketing alliance was founded in conjunction with Swiss Exchange Group SWX, and the Swiss Biotech Association. In a targeted manner, the alliance raises Switzerland’s profile as an economic centre and positons the biotech regions as innovative and entrepreneurial focal points for research, production and services. Swiss Biotech wants to spread the message of Switzerland as one of the top biotech locations in the world. This will be achieved by presenting a comprehensive picture of biotechnology including all pillars of the value chain.

The bases for success in biotechnology are the critical mass of research institutes and rapid technology transfer. The vicinity to industry and well-trained workforce is another key-driver for success. Recently, Swiss regions opened a series of ‘Biotech-Parks’, thus enabling to offer increased value to companies.
