Holger Reithinger, Investment Director,

Dr Holger Reithinger is a Director of the 3i Germany’s
Healthcare practice. From 1997 - 2000, he was an Investment Manager
for Technologieholding VC GmbH. A leading German specialist early-stage
technology fund in its days, it was acquired by 3i Germany in Feb
2000.
He worked in industry as Product Development Manager
with Biometra/Whatman PLC where he was responsible for the identification,
development and marketing of new molecular biological products.
He holds a PhD in Biochemistry, which he obtained
on protein design under Prof Dr Hartmut Michel (Nobel Laureate 1988)
at the Max-Planck-Institute of Biophysics, and as an undergraduate
read Molecular Biology/Microbial Biology and Biochemistry at Universities
of Heidelberg and Munich.

During an eight month sabbatical, she held the position
of COO of a Scandinavian biotech company. Previously, she worked
for six years in medical research in Cambridge (UK), Spain and Austria,

Previously, he was General Manager of Bioserve Ltd, a healthcare

at Genset, a genomic company, and VP of clinical development at
Ipsen Beaufour, a European pharmaceutical group. As a Medical Doctor,
François practiced medical oncology as an Assistant Professor
at the Gustave Roussy Institute in Paris and was also research fellow
at the US National Cancer Institute.
François received his MD from Paris School
of Medicine, and a master of management from the Sloan School at
MIT.

Piggott, Senior Director, Global Business

Chris has spent his entire career in Aventis and
its predecessor companies since - a pharmacology graduate - joining
May & Baker in the UK as a medical representative in 1974. The
next part of his career was spent in commercial functions in the
UK and internationally, until with the creation of Hoechst Marion
Roussel in 1995 he became head of Strategic Marketing and Business
Development in the UK.
In 1998, Chris assumed responsibility in the HMR
Global Business Development team, based in New Jersey, for relationships
with Japanese companies, and he continued in this role with the
formation of Aventis in 2000. During this period he was also responsible
for providing licensing support to the anti-infective, and later
the respiratory research groups. In 2002, Chris moved back to Europe
and, based in Paris, assumed the role of supporting first the CNS
research group, and more recently leading licensing efforts in the
oncology area. Chris is also responsible for coordinating Aventis'
product divestments, and from time to time for the negotiation of
major licensing deals in other therapeutic areas.
During his time in licensing, Chris has worked on
deals with US, European and Japanese partners, and with biotech,
mid-size and big pharmaceutical partners.

Chris Henderson, Director Global Licensing,

Chris joined the pharmaceutical industry in 1980
when he left an academic post as a Lecturer in pharmacology and
went to Pfizer Central Research in Sandwich, Kent. After 7 years
with Pfizer, where latterly he was responsible for research programmes
in the heart failure area, he moved to ICI Pharmaceuticals (which
became part of Zeneca) at Alderley Park to initiate new cardiac
research.
In 1991, Chris changed role within research when
he became responsible for scientific liaison and research collaborations,
particularly in the cardiovascular and metabolism areas. This position
entailed interaction with other Zeneca functions, such as commercial
and medical, as well as the establishment and management of external
research alliances with UK and US academic groups.
Chris' next appointment was as Collaborations Manager
within the TAG (Technology Access Group) – this group had
been set up after a major review of Zeneca's strategy and R&D
organisation, with the objective of establishing new R&D collaborations
with Academia and the Biotech Industry.
Chris joined Product Licensing at Zeneca in 1996
and is now responsible within AstraZeneca Global Licensing, as part
of a dedicated "Japan Team", for interactions including
deal-making with Japanese-based pharmaceutical companies across
all therapy areas as well as acting as Global Transaction Manager
(“deal-maker”) for the Cardiovascular Therapy Area.
He has managed Licensing Teams responsible for deals of many different
types with a wide range of partners.

of more than 200 publications in immunology, cell biology and molecular
biology and served as adjunct professor of biotechnology at the

Heinz Michael Meier has been CEO of Bayern Kapital, a wholly owned
subsidiary of LfA Förderbank Bayern, the Bavarian Bank for
the Advancement of the economy, since the company's foundation in
1995. He is responsible for the management of Venture Capital Funds
nearly totalling EUR 200 million. Bayern Kapital is managing its
own fund as well as Seedfonds Bayern and Technofonds Bayern I and
II. The main investment focus is early stage financing of enterprises
in the field of biotechnology, IT, software and other key industrial
technologies.
Before his career as VC manager Mr. Meier served
as Senior Vice President of Bayerische Landesbank's Equity Investment
Division. He also held various positions in Bayerische Landesbank's
Foreign Operations. As First Vice President of the Bank's International
Network Division his responsibilities included the strategic orientation
and the operational control of the Bank's foreign subsidiaries,
branches and representative offices. He also served as First Head
of Bayerische Landesbank's operations in Hungary and the Bavarian
Government's Liaison Office in Budapest.
Prior to his banking career Mr. Meier was a Senior
Official in the Economic and Treasury Division of the Bavarian Ministry
of Finance. He also held assignments in the Organization of Economic
Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris and Munich University's
Institute of Political Science and Public Law.
Mr. Meier is Lecturer at Munich's Academy of Business
Administration (VWA). His Memberships include the German Industry
Association's Tönissteiner Kreis, Berlin. He also served as
Industry and Commerce Representative on the Bavarian Tax Advisors'
Examination Board.
Mr. Meier pursued his professional studies at the
Universities of Munich and Geneva and The London School of Economics
and is a scholar of Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes
(German National Scholarship Foundation). He earned his qualification
as attorney with
distinction in Munich. Postgraduate studies in the USA at George
Washington University
and the University of Illinois were honored with an M.C.L. Degree.

company. He was previously an executive with Bristol-Myers Squibb

and Ciba-Geigy AG (now Novartis) in business development. Mr Rombotis
read Economics and Sociology at Williams College, USA and received

Dimitri F. Dimitriou, has over 17 years experience
in healthcare in corporate transactions / business development,
general management, marketing, sales, finance and R&D, both
in the pharma and biotech sectors. He received his first degree
in Biochemistry from the University of London prior to graduating
in Pathology & Toxicology from the Royal Postgraduate Medical
School in London in 1984.
He began his career in the pharmaceutical industry
as Product Manager in Marketing at Sandoz (Novartis) and was recruited
in 1989 into Procter & Gamble, where he spent around 8 years
in managerial positions including overall responsibility for Sales
and Marketing for the pharmaceutical business in Asia, and later,
Finance, Clinical Development of anti-infectives, and heading Medical
Information prior to eventually concentrating in Licensing and Acquisitions
as Business Development Manager-Europe.
Dimitri joined SmithKline Beecham in 1996 as Associate
Director and was appointed Director, Worldwide Business Development
in 1998 and Senior Director in January 2000. His responsibilities
included worldwide transactions - licensing deals, alliances and
collaborations with pharmaceutical and biotech companies. In his
role at SmithKline Beecham and GlaxoSmithKline, he routinely handled
identification of opportunities, commercial assessment and due diligence,
development of deal structures, and agreement negotiations. In 2001,
he left GSK to move to the biotech sector as CEO of the London-based
drug discovery company Xcellsyz and in addition set up DyoDelta
Biosciences, a company providing support in licensing, corporate
and financing transactions. In mid-2002, Dimitri joined Bristol-Myers
Squibb setting up and heading the Business Development function
in Europe, responsible for the full array of business development
opportunities on a global basis with a focus on deals with European
companies, before leaving a few months later to return to DyoDelta
Biosciences.
Dimitri has managed approx. 25 executed collaborations,
having been involved in over 100 partnering projects over the past
8 years. He is a regular speaker in partnering conferences and also
a member of the Convocation of the University of London, the Licensing
Executives Society, the Pharmaceutical Licensing Group, British
Mensa and the Chairman of the Advisory Board of Pharmalicensing.

She joined Earlybird after her postdoctoral training

She has gained further research expertise in programs at Arizona
State University in Phoenix, Arizona and at the Marine
Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
Marion received a Dipl.-Biol. (MS equivalent) from
the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich.
She is author of several articles that were published

Chris Britten is a Director of GSK Ventures within

Chris joined Ventures in early 2002 and has responsibility for the

As Head of Global Search and Evaluation, Global
Business Development and Licensing at Novartis AG, Samir Master
is responsible for facilitating the initial evaluation and research
for in-licensing compounds of biotech and specialty pharma companies,
and overseas.
In September 2002, Dr. Master joined Novartis and
prior to his current position was responsible for identifying and
evaluating in-licensing compounds for equity investments and M&A
opportunities with biotechnology and specialty pharmaceuticals companies.
Prior to joining Novartis, he was Entrepreneur-in-Residence
at Bessemer Venture Partners. With over six years in venture capital
financing, his strategic focus has been in investment opportunities
for private biopharmaceutical, life sciences and medical device
companies.
Trained as an M.D., he completed post-graduate studies
at University of Washington in Internal Medicine and at the University
of Michigan in Dermatology. Dr. Master received his medical degree
from Northwestern Medical School while completing his MBA at the
Kellogg Graduate School of Management.
Dr. Master is currently a member of the Board of
Associates at MIT’s Whitehead Institute.

Christoph H. Westphal, General Partner,

Christoph H. Westphal is a general partner in our
Boston office. Christoph joined Polaris in June 2000. He focuses
on investment opportunities in medical technology and material science.
Experience: Prior
to joining Polaris, Christoph was at McKinsey & Co. in Boston
and Los Angeles, working with high-growth biotech, pharmaceutical,
materials science, wireless, and e-commerce companies. He was lead
author on several papers published in Cell and Nature Genetics and
is the inventor on two patents in the areas of cancer genetics and
metabolic diseases.
Boards: Christoph
represents or has represented Polaris on the boards of directors
of Advion BioSciences, Athenix Corp, Saegis Pharmaceuticals, eNOS
Pharmaceuticals, Hydra BioSciences, and Nanosys. He was also founder
and start-up CEO, and serves as vice chairman of both Momenta Pharmaceuticals,
Inc. and Alnylam Pharmaceuticals.
Education: Christoph
completed his MD at Harvard Medical School and his PhD in genetics
at Harvard University in six years. He majored in economics, literature,
and biology while completing a BA summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa
at Columbia University in three years. After graduating from Columbia,
and prior to graduate schools, Christoph spent one year working
with a medical team and studying in Cameroon and at the Albert Schweitzer
Hospital in Africa, and worked for one year at a Max Planck Institute
in Germany as a Fulbright/DAAD scholar.

Swiss Exchange
Frances Bornstein holds a degree in business management
from Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich. Following her studies,
she was initially a consultant to the retailing industry. In 1996,
she turned to business journalism, working as a television reporter
and for an agency specialised in financial market news. She has
been working for the SWX Swiss Exchange since December of 1998.

Dr. Helmut M. Schühsler has been responsible
for over 20 TVM investments in life science companies, and has since
1990 served on various committees, among others as a member of the
senate of the Hermann von Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren
(HGF). Currently he is a board member at the following life science
companies: Curacyte AG, GPC Biotech AG, Ingenium Pharmaceuticals
AG, Intercell AG, MediGene AG, Morphochem AG, Peptor Ltd, and SelectX
Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
Dr. Schühsler also is a member of the Supervisory
Board of Garching Innovation GmbH, the technology transfer institution
of the Max Planck Society, and of Ascenion GmbH, the technology
transfer organisation of the HGF institutes GSF, GBF, and MDC.
Prior to TVM, he was an Investment Manager at Horizonte
Venture Management in Vienna. Dr. Schühsler wrote his doctoral
thesis at the Economics University of Vienna in the area of business
administration

Michel HUBERT was appointed Vice-President, Business
Development of Transgene in November 2001. Prior to joining Transgene,
Michel HUBERT worked for eleven years for Laboratoires Fournier.
As Fournier's Executive Director, Business Development & Licensing,
he was responsible for creating and managing Fournier's Business
Development and Licensing Department. Previously, he served as a
Business Development Manager for Rhône-Poulenc Santé
(now Aventis). Michel HUBERT is a graduate of the Strasbourg School
of Pharmacy and holds a Master of Science in International Business
from St Mary's College of California.

| Simon
Sturge, Chief
Executive Officer, Vernalis
Simon Sturge became Chief Executive Officer of Vernalis
plc following its merger in September 2003 with British Biotech
plc. British Biotech plc completed a merger with RiboTargets Ltd
in April 2003. Mr. Sturge founded RiboTargets when it was spun out
from the Medical Research Council’s Laboratory of Molecular
Biology in July 1997 with a £7 million venture capital investment.
Having gained a degree in biology from Sussex University
in 1980, Mr. Sturge has spent more than twenty years in the pharmaceutical
industry in a variety of roles. After leaving university Mr. Sturge
became Product Manager of Napp Laboratories, Head of Sales and Marketing
at Smiths Industries and Business Development Manager at Astra Pharmaceuticals
before joining Celltech in 1988. Mr. Sturge was appointed Chief
Executive of Celltech Biologics plc (now Lonza Biologics plc) in
1995 where he remained for two years before joining RiboTargets
as Chief Executive.
Mr. Sturge is regularly asked to speak at international conferences
and for the last two years has been invited to attend the World
Economic Forum.

J Lowcock, Managing Director, Warburg
Pincus International LLC
Nick Lowcock joined the Warburg Pincus Healthcare
Group in 1994. Based in London, he is responsible for the firm’s
European healthcare investment activities. This includes a portfolio
with an estimated market value of around $1 billion and a rate of
new investment averaging over $100 million per year. Mr. Lowcock
spent the first four years of his career with Warburg Pincus in
New York. He received an MBA (with distinction) from the Wharton
School of the University of Pennsylvania and a BA (first class)
in Experimental Psychology from Oxford University. His previous
experience includes two years as a consultant at The Boston Consulting
Group in New York and four years in the Pharmaceutical Industry
in the United Kingdom. Mr. Lowcock currently serves on the board
of directors of Leciva, Eurand, Strakan, Proskelia, Domus and PharmaIdea.
He is also a trustee of Project Hope UK, a charity devoted to improving
healthcare in developing nations. Mr. Lowcock is a member of the
Executive Management Group of Warburg Pincus.

N. Peter Kostopulos is Chairman of the Strategic
Alliances Committee of the Licensing Executives Society (USA/Canada)
and a partner in the Life Sciences Group of Womble Carlyle Sandridge
& Rice, PLLC, a U.S. law firm of more than 450 lawyers. He represents
private and public companies in a variety of R&D and commercial
collaborations, and is particularly active in negotiating transatlantic
transactions involving products and services in the United States
and the European Union. Peter is considered an expert on strategic
alliances, and has spoken at numerous U.S. and European conferences
on a variety of topics, including negotiating R&D agreements,
conducting due diligence, managing alliances to maximize return,
dispute resolution, and the application of competition policy to
intellectual property transactions.
Peter has represented clients in judicial disputes
involving breach of patent license agreements for failure to make
best efforts, to report royalties, and to protect intellectual property,
as well as cases alleging misappropriation of trade dress, trademark,
and copyrights. He recently concluded a lawsuit brought against
a European client by a prominent U.S. university alleging damages
of $380 million for breach of multiple license agreements, which
resulted in a favorable settlement for his client and established
significant legal precedent regarding the U.S. enforcement of royalty
agreements concerning non-U.S. patents.
This experience provides clients with legal advice
that reflects the business realities of international drug development,
which facilitates communication with his clients and adverse parties
and often optimizes the value of the deal.
Peter is a graduate of the Georgetown University
Law Center and Georgetown University, based in Washington D.C. Prior
to entering private practice, he served as counsel for the Federal
Trade Commission on competition law matters and as trial counsel
for the Department of Justice, where he tried over 70 jury trials.
In addition to his service as Chair of the U.S.-Canada LES Strategic
Alliance Committee, he is a member of the American Bar Association’s
Business Law and Intellectual Property Committees. In addition to
English, Mr. Kostopulos speaks French and limited Greek.

Bronstein, Managing Director, Zero
Stage Capital
Dr. Bronstein joined Zero Stage Capital in 1999.
He has responsibility for life sciences investing and advises portfolio
companies on organizational, research and development, and business
development issues, working closely with them from start-up through
more advanced stages of development. Recently, he served as interim
CEO of Spherics, a Zero Stage Capital portfolio company developing
bioadhesive oral drug delivery systems.
Dr. Bronstein has more than a decade of experience
as a biotech entrepreneur, corporate executive, and advisor to biomedical
and scientific companies. He was co-founder, president, and chief
executive officer of Peptimmune, Inc., a venture capital financed
biotechnology company developing immunotherapeutics, which was acquired
by Genzyme in July 1999. Prior to Peptimmune, he was a senior executive
with Seaflower Associates, Inc., a private equity advisory firm
in Waltham, MA. From 1989-1993 Dr. Bronstein served as vice president
of medical affairs and medical director of BioSurface Technology,
Inc., which was acquired by Genzyme Corporation after an initial
public offering. Dr. Bronstein began his career as a staff pathologist
at the Massachusetts General Hospital and was on the faculty of
Harvard Medical School.
In addition to serving as a director on the boards
of privately held life sciences companies, Dr. Bronstein is board
member of Rhode Island’s Slater Center for Biomedical Technology.
Dr. Bronstein received an A.B. in biology (magna
cum laude), an MD degree, and an MBA (with high honors) all from
Boston University.
