| Lexicon Pharmaceuticals
Lexicon Pharmaceuticals is a biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and development of breakthrough treatments for human disease. The company is using its proprietary gene knockout technology to systematically discover the physiological and behavioral functions of 5,000 pharmaceutically relevant genes. Through this program, known as the Genome5000™ program, Lexicon has discovered more than 100 promising drug targets and created a broad pipeline of clinical and preclinical programs in the therapeutic areas of cardiology, gastroenterology, immunology and oncology, metabolism, neurology and ophthalmology.
Drug Development Programs
Lexicon plans to advance 10 drug candidates into human clinical trials through 2010. This strategic initiative is referred to as the 10TO10 program and is a natural evolution of the company’s target identification efforts. Lexicon has advanced three drug candidates into human clinical trials, filed an Investigational New Drug (IND) application for a fourth candidate, has one additional program in preclinical development, and a number of additional programs in various stages of preclinical research. The company’s lead program, LX6171, is in Phase 2 clinical trials for the treatment of cognitive disorders. Lexicon’s drug pipeline consists of small molecule and biologic drug candidates, a fact that diversifies the company’s approach to drug discovery and development. All of Lexicon’s drug targets have been identified internally as part of its Genome5000 program.
Strategic Alliances
To advance the development and commercialization of its programs, Lexicon is working both independently and through collaborators which include Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, Genentech, Inc. and N.V. Organon.
